The JAMB (UTME) Cut off Mark is a crucial factor in determining the eligibility of prospective students for admission into higher learning institutions such as Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education. Students who desire admission to study any course in their preferred institution must meet their school’s minimum cut-off mark and pass the UTME exam.
The term “Cut-off Mark” refers to the minimum score required for one to be considered eligible for admission into a particular program or institution. For students seeking admission into higher institutions, meeting the minimum JAMB Cut-off mark is a requirement for consideration. Therefore, the JAMB Cut-off mark for 2023 represents the minimum score that a student must achieve to be admitted into their desired course of study. Failure to meet the cut-off mark will render the student ineligible for admission into any higher institution.
It should be noted that JAMB Cut-off Mark is determined by considering the overall performance of students in the year. This process is carried out by JAMB and other relevant parties. JAMB Cut-Off Mark 2023/24 Session
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will decide on the cut-off marks for applicants seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria after consultation with relevant educational sector stakeholders. The cut-off marks are determined based on the votes of vice-chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics, and provosts of colleges of education.
It should be acknowledged that institutions are not authorized to offer admission to candidates who score below the minimum cut-off mark approved for the respective tertiary institutions. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has granted each institution the autonomy to establish its cut-off mark, with a maximum of 220, but universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country must not go below 140, 100, and 80, respectively.
Course-Specific Cut-off Marks
Gaining admission into competitive courses such as Law, Medicine, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing, Accounting, Pharmacy and other professional courses requires students to score very high in their UTME Result. The cut-off marks for these courses are usually set high because of the stiff competition for limited available spaces. This is in compliance with the guidelines of the Nigerian Universities Commission which sets a limit to the number of students to be admitted by each university for a particular course, based on accreditation and other requirements.
Following the Post-UTME examination or screening, each institution will release its cut-off mark for the relevant academic year based on the performance of the candidates as a whole.
