Applications Open for 2023 Unemployed Youth Early Careers at Shoprite Group
The Shoprite Group is presently extending an invitation to young, unemployed individuals from South Africa, specifically those aged 18 to 34, to participate in the Early Careers at Shoprite Group programs. These initiatives offer specialized training and educational opportunities throughout the year for individuals lacking skills or employment.
Given the alarming youth unemployment rate of 63.9%, the Shoprite Group has prioritized its talent attraction and development strategy by emphasizing the provision of early career opportunities to unemployed young individuals. Upon successfully completing the program, participants are awarded part-qualifications at NQF-level 3. This approach aims to address the pressing issue of youth unemployment while equipping them with valuable skills and qualifications.
Since 2016, the Shoprite Group has made a substantial investment of over R586 million in its Retail Readiness Programme, benefiting more than 32,000 learners. Considered as one of the largest and most successful skills development initiatives undertaken by a South African retailer, this seven-week program focuses on equipping unemployed youth with essential skills required for employment in a retail setting or for starting their own businesses. As a leading participant in the YES Initiative (Youth Employment Service), the Shoprite Group has emerged as a significant contributor to youth employment. Since 2018, they have created 7,387 work opportunities for young individuals. YES learners undergo 12 months of on-the-job training in various in-store service departments such as the bakery, deli, and fresh foods, gaining valuable experience and skills.
