Call for applications Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) 2023 in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA)

Individuals from all African countries are currently invited to submit their applications for admission to pursue a Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, located in South Africa.

The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) is a highly regarded and intensive one-year program. It offers a unique opportunity for 25-30 outstanding individuals to immerse themselves in the study of human rights and democracy. The program involves spending six months in Pretoria, South Africa, and another six months at one of the 12 partner universities located across Africa.

The HRDA program at the Centre for Human Rights serves as the focal point for the African regional program within the Global Campus of Human Rights. The Global Campus of Human Rights is a worldwide network of universities supported by funding from the European Union. It operates through collaboration among seven regional programs, each based in a specific location. The regional programs are situated in Venice for Europe, Sarajevo/Bologna for South East Europe, Yerevan for the Caucasus, Pretoria for Africa, Bangkok for Asia-Pacific, Buenos Aires for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Beirut for the Arab world.

Requirements and Eligibility Criteria for the Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights:

Applicants must come from African region
Applicants for Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights
Applicants must be ready to enrol in full-time program
Graduates become members of the HRDA Alumni Association whose 537 members are currently active in the full spectrum of human rights work
Applicants must be in possession of the first degree in Law (LLB, licence en droit or licenciatura em direito) or an Honours degree relevant to human rights and democratisation.

To apply for the program at the University of Pretoria, the application process is conducted entirely online. All applications are processed through the Submittable online system. When submitting your application, make sure that all documents uploaded are typewritten.

During the application, you will be required to provide the following documents:

Previous academic records/transcripts
Previous degree certificate(s)
A copy of the bio-data page of your passport
A high-quality photograph of yourself
If your qualifications were not obtained in English, you will need to provide a certificate for the TOEFL, SAT1, or IELTS test to demonstrate English language proficiency.
